The EP “Brașov Tales” is the third release by songwriter and exceptional guitarist Lars Kutschke. With his five original compositions, he unfolds a magnificent folio of genres, alternating between blues, rock, funk, soul, gospel, and jazz.
Since 2018, the Dresden native and his band have been guests at the annual jazz and blues festival in Brașov, a city nestled in the Romanian Carpathian Mountains. The EP references this place, as most of the pieces were written during their summer stays there – inspired by places, moods, and encounters.
The music was recorded live in the studio in one day with Chris Coleman (drums) – who even played for Prince –, Till Sahm (keys), and Tom Götze (bass). “Brașov Tales” is the documentation of this session, a recording of a specific moment in time and the feelings and energies in space – similar to a jazz album.
The palette ranges from energetic funk to darker and atmospheric soundscapes, rock riffs that blend with soulful guitar melodies, and even gospel elements. All songs tell stories translated into sound. And Lars Kutschke – shaped by a childhood spent sitting spellbound down in front of a record player – recommends listening chronologically through the five chapters of his “Brașov Tales”.
